SO, WHAT THE HECK IS METAL CLAY ANYWAY?
Well, it’s a brand new technology that’s only been
around since the early 90’s, and was invented by
Mitsubishi Materials in Japan. Mitsubishi’s product is
called Precious Metal Clay - aka PMC and Aida Chemical
Industries (the only other producer of silver/gold
metal clay) manufactures Art Clay Silver - aka ACS.
Each brand consists of microscopic particles of pure
(fine) silver or 24k gold; an organic, non toxic binder
and pure water which, when combined form a clay like material. When fired at a high heat, binders and water
are burned off and the metal particles fuse tightly
together to create a dense, strong metal item. The
final object can legally be hallmarked as .999 fine
silver.
Both brands of silver and gold metal clays are
completely non toxic and made using green manufacturing
processes.
Recently a company called Metal Adventures has developed
a bronze version of metal clay called BronzClay. Many
of our members are excited to be using this new material
in their work. BronzClay offers a golden alternative to
silver with out the high cost of 24k gold.
Bronze is an alloy (marriage) of tin and copper and is
an incredibly hard metal. [ More to come from Bill

ABOUT ETSY METALCLAY
Since the material we use doesn’t start out as either a
pure clay material or a traditionally milled metal, but
is a combination of both - we decided to blend the two
to come up with our team’s name. MetalClay. One word,
one new fascinating material.
As it states on our profile page:
Etsy MetalClay is a global group of jewelry artists and
designers using silver, gold and bronze metal clays to
create their work. We strive to make innovative; unique
and boundary pushing designs - embracing both modern
technology and old world traditions. EMC members benefit
by networking and developing relationships with other
Etsy metal clay sellers while sharing tips, techniques
and knowledge.
In other words, we’re a wonderful, supportive, fun
loving, creative and talented array of jewelry artists
who love to create beautiful finery that you might just
fall in love with too!
